The area outside the Exmouth station entrance has award-winning landscaping and planting which is attractive to visitors and residents alike. However it is let down in areas which we seek to see improved.
We are defining this area as the area bounded by the railway, the estuary, Imperial Road and the boatyard.
Do you approve of a sensible practical plan for the improvement of the area around the station?
We seek to create a welcoming and attractive arrival area in which the town can take pride. Specifically by addressing these main areas of concern:-
Pathways: The need to widen and improve the pathways from the station concourse to the Estuary Trail, through to the Royal Avenue roundabout and also through to the long stay car parks and remove the pinch points
Public toilets: The need to replace the public toilets, which are a disgrace to the town with a modern block, but this must be repositioned so that they do not obstruct the passageway.
Side entrance to the station: The need to discuss with GWR the opening up of the side entrance to the station which would facilitate a sensible pick up/drop off area and a much needed taxi rank as well as giving an estuary view.
Additional areas of concern are:
Signposting: Improved clear and attractive signposting, especially signposting to the estuary, the beach and the town centre, would greatly enhance this area.
Neglected offices: The office leased to Stagecoach who occupy the building next to the station has been allowed to deteriorate badly and is in need of repair and redecoration.
Overgrown triangular area: The triangular area adjacent to Marks and Spencer and the pathway to the leisure centre is overgrown with untended and unattractive shrubs and is partially bordered on two sides with a fence in poor condition with broken gates.
This just a sample but if there is considerable support we would urge the Town Council to agree an overall plan for the area. Many items could be done individually as and when funds are available, but some needed to be planned as they have an effect on others.
There is only one expensive item and that is the toilets which would be several hundred thousand pounds, so they are the cornerstone of the whole project.
Above and below: Pathway at side of station, passing the Stagecoach office and the toilets, blocking view of estuary
Above: Pathway leading out to estuary. Below: Approaching the rear entrance to the station
Above: The overgrown triangular area, and a pinch-point where cyclists and pedestrians share a narrow pavement. Below: More pinch-points
